How to Organize Kids Toys

Holy freaking toys! I have a four year old and a one year old and the toys are only getting worse. I swear, I feel like a freaking hoarder some days. It's out of freaking control. How many times can I say "freaking" in one blog post!?

This weekend was Lily's 4th birthday so our house just got that much more crowded with new toys. I started having a panic attack from all the wrapping paper shreds, Disney bags, and plastic twist ties on those damn princess dolls. I was itching to organize. My first room, the family room.

When starting to organize toys most people's first idea is to buy those plastic bins at Target. While those are super functional, they don't last. If you have the space or if you have existing furniture in your family room, I recommend you hide the toys in something more "grown up". This console not only looks pretty in my family room but it doubles as a "grown up" toy chest. I cleaned out the paperwork and random crap and started making space for all the toys that use to sit on our floor : )

The first step is to invest in some quality baskets. You can use the plastic bins but these toys are going to be with you for a loonnnng time. If you have little kids like me, the toys aren't going anywhere anytime soon, so why not invest in a basket that's going to withstand time? I first measured my shelves then went online from the comfort of my own couch to research the perfect sized basket. I bought my baskets at Crate and Barrel.

Once you have your baskets it's time to separate your toys and bust out your label machine! If you don't have one, buy one. It's like an organizer's dream. The labels print out in seconds and it's perfect every time.

If you have multiple items in one bin you can seperate them into smaller bags to keep it even more organized. I did this with all the art supplies because that was just a total hot mess.

I broke everything up into categories: Princess Wands & Accessories, Coloring books, Art Supplies .....

I cleaned it all up and put everything back neatly.

Now we have a new rule: You can only take out one basket at a time!

See, it's totally working : )

Aw, I feel so much better.

Now, on to the bigger mess. The playroom ........ ugh.
